Scar Camouflage Tattooing
Scar camouflage tattooing is an advanced paramedical tattooing treatment designed to help soften, blend and reduce the appearance of scars by carefully implanting custom pigment tones into the skin. This specialised technique can be used on a variety of scars including surgical scars, breast surgery scars, tummy tuck scars, self-harm scars, injury scars and stretchmarks once fully healed.
At Pink Lotus Australia, Aleisha Michael combines over 18 years of tattooing experience with extensive knowledge in medical tattooing to create natural-looking results tailored to each client’s skin tone and scar condition. Every treatment is customised, as scar tissue can vary greatly in texture, colour and how it holds pigment over time.
Scar camouflage tattooing may help improve confidence and restore balance to the skin by reducing contrast between the scar and surrounding tissue. Treatments are performed using professional tattooing techniques, advanced colour theory and a gradual layering approach to achieve the most realistic outcome possible.
Some scars may also benefit from a combination approach including inkless scar revision or stretchmark revision treatments to improve texture and overall skin appearance before pigment implantation. Multiple sessions are often recommended for optimal healed results.
Every scar and skin type responds differently to scar camouflage tattooing, which means treatment plans can vary greatly from person to person. On average, most clients require approximately 3–5 sessions to achieve the desired result, depending on the age of the scar, scar texture, colour variation, skin integrity and how the skin retains pigment throughout the healing process.
Areas involving reconstructed skin, skin grafts or flap procedures may require additional sessions- sometimes up to 10 treatments- depending on where the donor skin has been taken from and how the reconstructed tissue responds to tattooing. Factors such as radiation therapy, scar thickness, circulation, collagen changes and previous surgical history can all influence the treatment outcome and healing process.
Because scar tissue behaves differently to normal skin, results are built gradually over time using a layered and customised approach to ensure the safest and most natural-looking outcome possible. Each client’s journey is unique, and treatment recommendations will always be tailored to the individual case following a thorough consultation and assessment.
For optimal scar camouflage tattooing results, scars must be fully healed, matured and ideally white or lighter in colour before pigment implantation can begin. Fresh, red, pink, purple or inflamed scars are still actively healing beneath the surface and are generally not suitable for scar camouflage tattooing at that stage.
If your scar is not yet ready for camouflage tattooing, we may recommend alternative treatments to help support and accelerate the healing and maturation process first. This can include a combination of Laser Genesis treatments and Inkless Scar Revision techniques, which may assist in improving scar texture, reducing redness, stimulating collagen production and encouraging the scar to mature more efficiently over time.
Because every scar heals differently, treatment recommendations vary depending on factors such as scar age, surgical technique, radiation history, skin condition, location on the body and overall tissue health. Our goal is to prepare the skin as safely and effectively as possible so we can work towards achieving the best possible scar camouflage results in future sessions.
